Forty five millimeters. That’s the Goldilocks depth for a 1050ml tray. Too shallow – 35mm – and a chicken tikka masala with rice would push against the lid. Too deep – 55mm – and the food looks lost, customers complain about “air in the box.” At 45mm, the curry sits just below the rim, the rice stays on its side, and the lid doesn’t touch the sauce. A fastcasual Indian chain tested all three depths. 45mm won.
They use these gold trays for their “curry set” takeout. Rice on one side, butter chicken on the other, a plastic lid snapped on top. The 8.66 by 5.91 inch footprint fits perfectly in their hot bags. The owner noticed something else: customers post photos of the gold tray on Instagram. The yellow curry against the warm gold interior looks rich. Silver trays never got that reaction.
You don’t have to use the plastic lid. Foil lids are also available – crimp by hand. Or heat seal film if you need leakproof for thinner sauces. But at 1050ml, most buyers are packing semi thick curries or casseroles. The 45mm depth handles a family size mac and cheese just as well. A comfort food restaurant in Ohio uses these for their “feeds four” mac. They fill, top with breadcrumbs, and send it out with a foil lid. The customer bakes at home for 20 minutes. The gold tray goes straight into the oven.
Packing is 500 per carton. The carton is 44.5 x 31.5 x 33.5cm – a compact box for a tray this size. The gold lacquer is baked on before forming, so it won’t scratch when the trays nest.
One clever use: a meal prep service for athletes uses these for their “carb reload” bowls – 400g of jasmine rice, 200g of curry chicken, and a side of vegetables. The 45mm depth keeps the components layered. The athlete microwaves the tray, stirs everything together, and eats straight from the gold container. The service switched from black plastic because customers complained about “microwave smell.” Aluminum has no smell.
Recycling is straightforward. Rinse and toss. The gold coating burns off in the recycling furnace.
So if you’ve been struggling to find a tray that’s not too shallow and not too deep, this 1050ml gold rectangle is the one. It holds a generous portion, stacks well, and makes your curry look like it belongs on a food blog.
