Walk into a Parisian patisserie and you will see these little gold cups everywhere. They hold exactly one serving of crème brûlée – 125ml, about 4.2 ounces. The round shape is 84mm across the top, roughly 3.3 inches. Pastry chefs love them because you can torch the sugar right in the container. The aluminum handles the heat from a blowtorch without warping, and the gold coating makes the dessert look like it belongs in a fine dining restaurant, not a takeout bag.
But here is where this little container gets interesting. It is heat sealable. That means you can fill it with a concentrated consommé or a soup shot, run it through a sealer machine, and send it out without any risk of leakage. A ramen shop in Tokyo uses these for their "kaiseki-style" tasting menu – five small gold cups, each with a different broth, sealed and stacked in a bento box. Customers peel the film off one by one as they eat. The heat seal keeps each soup separate and at the right temperature.
Of course, you do not have to use the heat seal. The rim is still crimpable by hand. So if you are a bakery packing individual cheesecakes or a caterer sending out sauce portions, just fold a cardboard lid over the top and go. One dessert shop uses these for their panna cotta – they chill the cups, put a clear plastic lid on top (available separately), and sell them in four-packs. The gold color makes the vanilla custard pop, and customers keep the cups for office supplies afterward.
From a production perspective, this 125ml round is one of the most efficient shapes to manufacture. The draw ratio is shallow – about 0.3 – so the aluminum stretches evenly without thinning at the corners. A high-speed press can punch out 80 to 100 of these per minute from a single coil. The gold lacquer is applied before forming, baked on, and then the coil goes into the press. This pre-coating method ensures the color is consistent across every cup, no flaking or uneven spots. The alloy is standard 8011, food-grade, FDA compliant.
Why gold instead of silver for a container this small? Because size matters for first impressions. A small silver cup can look like a leftover sauce container. A small gold cup looks like a gift. Studies show that consumers perceive gold-colored packaging as 23 to 31 percent more premium than standard silver, even for the exact same food. For a dessert shop or a soup-focused takeout spot, that perception translates directly into willingness to pay a higher price.
The 125ml size also hits a sweet spot for portion control. Too small – 60ml feels like a sample. Too large – 200ml is too much for a rich dessert like crème brûlée or a concentrated soup. At 125ml, you get a satisfying single serving without waste. A meal kit company uses these for their "sauce bomb" – a sealed gold cup of red wine reduction that customers heat in hot water and pour over steak. The cup goes straight into the recycling bin after.
Recycling, by the way, works exactly like any other aluminum container. Rinse off the food residue – or don't, if your local facility accepts it – and toss it in the bin. The gold coating does not interfere with the recycling process. Modern sorting facilities use eddy currents to separate aluminum, and the color makes no difference.
So if you are running a pastry kitchen, a ramen shop, a catering business, or a meal kit service, this 3.3 inch gold cup deserves a look. It torches, it seals, it stacks, and it makes your food look more expensive than it actually is.
